What is real hip-hop to you? In my opinion Hip-hop is not the music that is played on the radio when you get in the car. Hip-hop is a movement, a culture, a community as well as a genre of music. Hip-Hop started in the early 1970s among African American youths residing in the South of Bronx in New York City. It became popular outside of the African American community in the late 1980s and by the 2010s became the most listened-to musical genre in the world. Hip-Hop is not just music it is a art that is the voice of the black commuity. In 1999 Mos def stated that hip-hop music no longer solely represents the voice of the black community, instead, hip-hop now represents all those who partake in or promote hip-hop culture whether male or female, rich or poor, black or white, American or foreign, and so on. Hip-Hop was a escape from the violence for African Americans, it helped them express themselve in a way that they wanted to. Hip-Hop music is made up from other forms of music like funk, soul, rhythm & blues, jazz, rock heavy metal e.tc.
